@ QVB Sydney

From the 6th – 9th of October Innovative was contracted by One Green Bean to bring to life an idea of a large scale projection in the roof of the central dome of the Queen Victoria Building. 6 months of planning went into the organisation of the installation which was part of the ART & ABOUT Festival throughout Sydney CBD.

The animation was created by Nathan Barnier from Katpivate and Mirage VFX from a high resolution photo taken of the heritage dome and deconstructed into 10,000 pieces as it smashed apart and revealed the sky above. The transition of the 4 seasons were the inspiration behind the scenery that went by the roof. The music was also produced for the animation to further enhance the experience.

Innovative designed and managed all technical aspects of the installation including: the rigging and custom construction of the 10m diameter screen hung in the dome, projection installation and playback with Coolux Pandora’s Box, Audio installation on 3 floors, blacking out the entire dome, and AV for the media launch on the opening day.

The projection was planned to run all day every day on the hour which posed a problem during daylight hours as the sunlight beamed in through the stained glass windows. To overcome this, we covered the entire dome with blackout plastic and used 2 of the largest projectors available to produce the impressive images that were projected. Hanging over 200kg’s of projectors vertically also presented a challenge, but some creative rigging and a long night of test building at our warehouse came up with a very compact rigging solution.

The Installation amazed all involved and more than served its purpose. With the help of One Green Bean it attracted a huge amount of media attention and hundreds of people into the QVB each hour who gazed up into the dome from below.

A big thank you to the fabulous people below for helping make this happen:
